If your card is also a debit visa or MC then I think the guy was telling porkies. All major rental firms have allowed me to use my Debit MC.

I suggest you complain to their head office and make a point of it.

I have been dreading the thought of going without cover but after doing all that research to find the best car rental deal I was not willing to pay an extra $25 to reduce my excess down to $330.
